EOH: The work of the seventh group, which is in the field of science, is closely allied to that of the seventh ray and is one with a most practical physical purpose. It is strictly magical in its technique, and this technique is intended to produce a synthesis between the three aspects of divinity upon the physical plane, or between life, the solar energies and the lunar forces. This involves a difficult task and much understanding; the work to be done is not easy to comprehend. It will be carried forward by first ray workers, assisted by seventh ray aspirants, but using fifth ray [JB: evidence-based] methods. They will thus combine, in their personnel, the work of the destroyer of outgrown forms [JB: revelatory Technique of the Presence to dispel illusion, Technique of the Light to dissipate glamour, Technique of Indifference to devitalize maya], the findings of the scientists who penetrated behind the outer form to its motivating energy [JB: study of symbols], and the practical work of the magician who—under the law—creates the new forms [JB: Rules of White Magic integrated into the revelatory Technique of the Presence (Agni Yoga)], as expressions of the inflowing life. This group of disciples will make a close study of the problem of evil [JB: that good that should have been left behind; study of TIME/cycles], and they will bring about a better understanding of the purpose existing in matter or substance, and the inflowing enlightened and different purpose of the soul aspect [JB: Virgo keynote]. That is why (in my earlier discussion of the subject) I linked the results of religion and of science together; religion is concerned with the awakening to conscious purpose of the soul [JB: in timeless space] in man or form, whilst science is concerned with the activity of the outer form as it lives its own life [JB: unfolds in time, an additional dimension of space], yet slowly becomes subservient to that purpose and to soul impress [JB: telepathy, science of contact and reaction to impression]. This is the thought contained in the words “scientific service” as used by me. The work of this group is therefore a triple one:

1. They will take the most advanced inferences of the workers in the field of SCIENCE [JB: Lightness of Being], and will then formulate the new hypotheses [JB: revelatory Technique of the Presence] upon which the next immediate steps forward in any particular scientific field will be founded [JB: a conscious universe (magic), the survival of consciousness (Consciousness Survival Project), the creative work of the Deva kingdom (Hodson,  VBA].

2. They will avail themselves of the sensitive reactions [JB: etheric vision] which the new spiritual Approaches (as taught by the world religion of the time) will have made possible and—utilising the inferences thus made available in connection with the inner world of spirit—will outline the nature of the incoming forces [JB: the 7th Ray and “the inflowing enlightened and different purpose of the soul”] which will determine and motivate the [JB: future Soul] CULTURE of the time.

3. Taking the substance or material [JB: “the purpose existing in matter or substance”], and the spiritual inferences [JB: #2, above] and the scientific hypotheses [JB: #1, above], they will formulate [JB: revelatory Practice of the Presence integrated with the Rules on White Magic] those forms of service on the physical plane which will precipitate with rapidity the Plan [JB: Hint: “the initiate knows because he works] for the immediate present. They will release through this blend of scientific knowledge and intuitive idealism, those energies which will further human interests, relate the subhuman to the human through a right interplay of forces [JB: Deva kingdom], and thus clear the way of those intellectual impediments [JB: dispell ILLUSION] which will (and always have) blocked man’s approach to the superhuman world.

I doubt that it will be possible to do much in connection with the forming of this group, and this for several reasons. [Page 58] The first is that such a group cannot be formed until a certain scientific discovery has been made of such moment that our present scientific inhibition in recognising the fact of the soul as a creative factor, will disappear. This discovery will be part of the acknowledged “facts of science” by the year 1975. Secondly, A.A.B. has not the necessary scientific knowledge to do more than grasp the broader outlines of the intended work, and then only primarily from the angle of the more mystical and philosophical approaches. Nor, my brothers, have I. It will take a fifth or seventh ray initiate to deal with this matter, and though I could invoke the assistance of such a brother, it does not seem to me a profitable expenditure of force at this time. The sigh of relief from A.A.B. as she grasps the fact that there is one less group to tackle on my and your behalf would almost warrant my making this a major reason!

This group will act as a channel of communication or intermediary between the energies which constitute the forces which construct the forms and fabricate the outer garment of Deity [JB: Deva Kingdom] and the human spirits. You will note here, consequently, the possibility that this group’s main initial work will be concerned with the problem of reincarnation. That problem deals with the taking of an outer garment or form under the Law of Rebirth.

Love-Wisdom as the synthetic link
between Humanity-Hierarchy and Hierarchy-Shamballa

DINA II, 518:  Souls on the wisdom aspect of the second ray go to Shamballa and join the great Council in some capacity or another. Such a one was the Buddha. Those on the love aspect of the second ray tread one or other of the various paths, primarily that of the World Saviours; They become the divine Psychologists and World Teachers. The Christ combined in Himself all these three great traits.

Those in this second group of souls upon the second ray likewise fall into two groups: They follow the way of specialised detail and of a comprehensive inclusiveness, and are the outstanding occultists; the other group is distinguished by pure love. Of the group which finds its way into Shamballa a developed simplicity will be found to govern all relations.

EOH 227: Many people the world over have for years been trained to recognise two things. First, the importance of the Wesak Festival at the time of the Full Moon of May, because it not only objectively links the major Eastern religion with the major Western faith, but because it esoterically provides the key to the open door between Shamballa and the Hierarchy, between the purpose of God (still unidentified by man, owing to his relatively low stage of evolution which makes it beyond human comprehension at present) and the method of God, which is love; it provides also the link between the Buddha, temporarily embodying will-wisdom, and the Christ, embodying love-wisdom, and also between humanity, focussed in consciousness through the Christ, and the Hierarchy, focussed in consciousness through the Buddha. Owing to the stress of humanity today and the urgency of the response which that distress evokes in the Hierarchy, the synthesis of these two reactions to the world crisis can prove adequate to bring in that outside assistance which could end the conflict along right lines and bring not only relief, but illumination to the human consciousness. But again—speaking here to a representative body of aspirants and disciples—I would state that the focus and the emphasis is not yet adequate to guarantee this extra-planetary response.

Will-to-Good NEUTRALIZING vs. Love EQUILIBRATING EVIL

438:  Today the Hierarchy is facing a climaxing activity. From the Full Moon of May, 1944, until the Full Moon of May, 1945, the Members of the Hierarchy will unitedly be putting forth Their maximum effort to close the door upon the Forces of Evil, to direct the Shamballa energy (now let loose upon the world) so that its destructive aspect may be transmuted or directed towards the stimulation which will result in the rebuilding of the world. This will then affect not only the Members of the Hierarchy, but all on Earth who respond to hierarchical impression. Have the following statement in mind:

“The focussed and concentrated work of the Hierarchy at the time of the Full Moon of May, 1944 is—by Their united effort, Their blended thought and Their illumined will power, under the trained guidance of [Page 438] the Buddha and the Christ—to withdraw the energy of the will-to-separation and aggression (a distortion of first ray energy) away from the Forces of Evil and channel it again, via the Hierarchy; it will then demonstrate as the Will-to-Good, and this will express itself via the men of goodwill on Earth. This requires a great Act of Absorption by the Hierarchy.”

The Buddha will start the process at the time of His appearance, through the use of a great first ray mantram. This can be used only by someone of His initiate standing and in collaboration with the Lord of the World. He will thereby deflect the Shamballa force which the Adepts of the Black Lodge have turned loose into the Axis nations; this has been made possible by their receptivity to the will-to-power. He will “corral” it (if I may use such a colloquial and inappropriate term) and will place it at the disposal of the Christ. The reception and the acceptance of this first ray energy will require a tremendous effort upon the part of the Christ, the Custodian of the energy of the second Ray of Love-Wisdom. It is for this “reception” that He started to prepare at the time of the April Full Moon.

The precession of the Venus synodic cycle is now occurring within the tropical sign of Aries. It began on April 20, 1929 (29Ar48) and will end on March 20, 2033 (00Ar22). For this cycle, the signs of the tropical zodiac corresponding to the five “New Moon” phases of the Sacred Pentagram are Aries, Scorpio, Gemini, Capricorn and Leo.

The next synodic cycle will begin on March 25, 2017 (04Ar57), ending on March 23, 2025, quite close to the Spring Equinox of the Hierarchical Conclave year of 2025. The New Moon in Aries of 2017 will occur on March 27.

• Every 8 years Venus completes a pentagram returning to the initial point of the 5-pointed star.
• Because it’s not exactly 8 but 7.99 years, there is a precession effect. That’s why the pentagrams shift slightly counterclockwise, taking about 13 precessed returns to complete the transit in a given sign (currently in Aries for 104 years: 8×13=104).
• There are 5 new moon (inferior or inner) and 5 full moon (superior or outer) alignments in each 8-year period.  Therefore, there are 1.6 years between each successive new moon.  Of course, between two new moon there is a full moon. A similar pentagram could be drawn for the full moons but the new moon is considered the natural starting point of a cycle.
• A geocentric Venus-Sun conjunction (either inner or outer) occurs every 0.8 years (1.6/2=0.8), that is, every 9.6 months (0.8×12=9.6). That’s why we will observe the next full moon alignment in September 9, 2018 and the next new moon will be in August 14, 2019.

2018.05.29: [JB] The Fifth Ray and the study of TIME and CYCLES of manifestation. [/JB]

R&I: The great principle of cleavage (which the fifth ray governs) is the dominating factor in his time sense; he now differentiates sharply between past and present and that which has to be ascertained in the future. Cleavage, in the sense of separateness, is finished for him and he now feels and knows something of the essential unity of all manifested life; therefore, from the angle of space, he has dominated and overcome cleavage and division; in the sense of time he has not. The great heresy of separateness no longer exists in his consciousness; the consciousness of the initiatory process is not yet over, however for that involves the recognition of time. 600

DN: RAY V — This ray has been in manifestation for nearly seventy years. It will pass out (by special and unique arrangement) in another fifty years [JB: circa 1975-2000], thus breaking into its own normal cycle, because it is deemed that the needed special impulse has been adequate and that the impetus given to the human “spirit of discovery” has served its purpose. Any further intensification of the mental processes just now (except through the general pervasive effect of the third ray) might prove disastrous. The ray cycles are usually set and determined, but, in collaboration with each other and because of the imminent spiritual Crisis of Approach, the Lord of the Fifth Ray and the Lord of the World have decided temporarily to withdraw this type of force. TCF: Mystery of Electricity. EP I: THE FIFTH PURPOSE OF DEITY. Ray V. Concrete Knowledge or Science

The plan takes form. The plan is form. Its purpose is the revelation of the mind of God. The past reveals the form, but the present indicates the flowing in of energy.

Students would learn much if they contrasted the building power of the higher mind with the destroying power of the lower. Just as the personality has no other function in the divine plan than to be a channel for, and the medium of expression of, the soul, so the lower mind is intended to be the channel for the pure inflow of higher mind energy. 75-76

[79] …his fifth ray reveals the way down into death or into incarnation (which is the death-like prison of the soul), or it reveals the way up and out of darkness into the pure light of God’s day. I am not interested in imparting weird or unusual items of information anent these matters for the delectation of an unhealthy mental appetite. EA: RAY V.—The energy of Concrete Science or Knowledge. To understand this expression of the divine will, the student should bear in mind the occult aphorism that “matter is spirit at its lowest point of manifestation and spirit is matter at its highest.” Basically this is the will which produces concretion and yet at the same time constitutes the point at which spirit and matter are balanced and co-equal. That is the reason why human perfection is carried forward consciously upon the mental plane, the fifth plane; this is brought about by the fifth ray and upon this plane liberation takes place at the time of the fifth initiation. This is the will which is inherent in substance and which actuates all atoms of which all forms are made. It is closely related to the first solar system even whilst liberating members of the human family who will constitute the nucleus around which the third solar system is constructed. The energy of this ray is intelligence; it is the seed of consciousness but not of consciousness as we understand it; it is the inherent [Page 600] life of matter and the will to work intelligently; it is that living something for which we have no name which was the product of the first solar system. It is one of the major assets of God, the Father and also of the human Monad. This is the Will to Action.

Today, as regards humanity, its highest expression is liberation—through death or initiation.

The Three Fundamental Cosmic Laws

TCF 232: This cosmic law, demonstrating thus in a threefold manner, might (for lack of a better term) be called the Law of Being.

TCF 1167: The Law of Economy is the law of the negative electron; the Law of Synthesis is the Law of the positive central life; whilst the Law of Attraction governs that which is produced by the relation of these two, and is itself controlled by a greater cosmic law which is the principle of the intelligence of substance.

The Law of Synthesis relates to the quantum strong forces synthesizing and binding protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom. The nucleons (protons and neutrons; remember that the neutron was discovered in 1932, after TCF was written) are the “positive central life” of the atom. According to the standard model, protons and neutrons are made up of (up and down) quarks.

The Law of Economy relates to the electromagnetic forces, such as the force pulling the negatively charged electron to the positive nucleus of the atom.

We may also consider the four Laws of Thermodynamics (fire by friction) and radioactive decay (quantum weak forces; repulsion of matter by the spirit) under this Law of Economy.

The Law of Attraction definitely relates to the Law of Gravitation. In fact, DK explicitly mentions gravitation as a “subsidiary” law of attraction.

TCF 1171: The Law of Gravitation.  This law is for the non-occult student the most puzzling and confusing of all the laws.  It shows itself in one aspect as the power, and the stronger urge that a more vital life may have upon the lesser, such as the power of the spirit of the Earth (the planetary Entity, not the planetary Logos) to hold all physical forms to itself and prevent their “scattering.”  This is due to the heavier vibration, the greater accumulative force, and the aggregated tamasic lives of the body of the planetary Entity.  This force works upon the negative, or lowest, aspect of all physical forms.  The Law of Gravitation shows itself also in the response of the soul of all things to the greater Soul in which the lesser finds itself.  This law, therefore, affects the two lowest forms of divine life, but not the highest.  It emanates in the first instance from the physical sun and the heart of the Sun.  The final synthesising forces which might be regarded as forms of spiritual gravitational activity are, nevertheless, not so, but are due to the working of another law, emanating from the central spiritual Sun.  The one is purely systemic, the other a cosmic law.

In practice, the three Laws work together, explaining why DK also refers to the Law of Attraction as the Law of Attraction and Repulsion (TCF 275). The repulsion (typical of electromagnetic, not gravitational, fields) is, I think, from the rotational motion within the spiral cyclic motion formulated by this Law of Attraction (i.e., “This law, therefore, affects the two lowest forms of divine life, but not the highest,” cited above). Furthermore, when DK refers to “that aspect of electrical phenomena which we call neutral” (TCF 1166) I believe that He’s not referring to the neutron (undiscovered by then) but to the fact that the particle theorized by modern science as the carrier of the gravitational force (the graviton) is electrically neutral (electrical charge = zero).

TCF 159: The synthetic activity of matter in the three types of movement,—rotary, spiralling-cyclic and onward progression,—which unified movement will be produced by the interaction of the fires of matter, of mind and of Spirit upon each other.

The Quest for the Holy Grail of Quantum Physics is to unify the three major forces of the universe (strong/weak nuclear forces [electrical fire], electromagnetism [fire by friction] and gravitation [solar fire]). However, the “graviton” is almost certain to remain undetected given its unfathomably small magnitude relative to the strong nuclear forces. It’s mind boggling that the vast gravitational force holding solar systems and galaxies together is 10⁴⁰ (10 to the 40^th) times smaller in magnitude than the nuclear forces. However, when we realize that such strong forces are so limited in scope (effective at very short subatomic distances) and that the gravitational Law of Attraction, –the Law of LOVE, the MAGNETIC power of CONSCIOUSNESS– is so vast in its expanse, then we may begin to understand the words of the Initiate Paul: “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is LOVE.” As Paul, “I pray that you [JB: all of us], being rooted and grounded in love, may have power [JB: the 4^th dimensional consciousness], together with all the saints, to comprehend the length and width and height and depth of His love.”

TCF: The Circle divided into four. This is the true circle of matter, the equal armed cross of the Holy Spirit, Who is the personification of active intelligent matter. This shows the fourth dimensional quality of matter and the penetration of the fire in four directions, its threefold radiation being symbolised by the triangles formed by the fourfold cross. This portrays the fourfold revolution of any atom. By this is not meant the ability of any atom to make four revolutions, but the fourth dimensional quality of the revolution which is the goal aimed at, and which is even now becoming known in matter during this [Page 161] fourth round, and in this fourth chain. As the fifth spirilla or fifth stream of force in an atom becomes developed, and man can conceive of a fourth-dimensional rotary movement, the accuracy of this symbol will be recognised.

On Quantum Light and Love and Power

1. The fundamental principle of quantum physics is that energy can only be absorbed and released in discrete, indivisible units called quanta. Expressed per unit of time, energy is power.
2. Light matter behaves both as a particle (classical or Newtonian mechanics) and as a wave (quantum mechanics). The wave behavior was formulated by Schrodinger as an interference pattern, or interactions, of the probability waves of a particle’s simultaneous location in space.
3. Love also behaves both as a particle and as a wave. It can be absorbed and released in discrete, indivisible units called heartbeats. It can also be expressed and perceived along a smooth continuum as the much subtler force of gravity shaping the multidimensional geometry of rights relations in space.
4. Energy follows thought. According to the Principle of Superposition, the act of observation (measuring) collapses wave functions into particle functions.
5. The memory of time does not determine present or future events. In the holographic world of quantum mechanics, a particle behaving like a wave can be observed to behave as a particle, again, by a future measurement.
6. Anything that can happen does happen, somewhere. There are many worlds existing as virtual parallel universes in the holographic reality of quantum mechanics, the science of energy and motion.
7. Quantum teleportation is a particle’s telepathic experience of entanglement in the space lattice. Quantum light conveys omnipresence, and gravitational love conveys omniscience, in the living, vibrating grid of space.
8. The unifying superstring theories attempt to portray Ariadne’s weaving threads of love and light throughout the world as tiny vibrating strands of energy from which all the matter, and all the forces, emanate in a ten dimensional living universe.
9. According to superstring theories, the dimensions of space are ten. These are: solid, liquid and gaseous, plus the 7 vibrational frequencies of the fiery plasma (etheric, astral, mental, buddhic, atmic, monadic and logoic).
10. The 11th dimension of the synthesizing “magic-brane” superstring theory corresponds to the cosmic astral plane. Therefore, we may expect a 12th dimension, the cosmic mental, added to the theory of all fundamental forces of nature known in this universe.
11. Spiritual initiations are radioactive expansions of consciousness, motions into deeper dimensions, or vibratory frequencies, within space. Initiations are attained and experienced in quantum leaps of measurable observations, soul recognitions and spiritual revelations.
12. In sum, mechanics is the study of motion. Motion is an act of the will of some consciousness in some plane, or dimension, of space. The fundamental motions of expansion and contraction , attraction and repulsion, correspond to: i) the sensations of pleasure and pain on the physical plane, ii) the fundamental e-motions of love and hate on the emotional plane, and iii) the acceptance or rejection of truth on the mental plane. These correspondences operate both on the physical universe and on the metaphysical cosmos. As above, so is below.

Meditation is the primary form of service for those following a spiritual path. It is a means of cooperation and alignment with hierarchical intent. The new moon period follows upon the cycle of outbreathing in the rhythmic cycles of the breath; it is a time of pause wherein together we can establish a soul-mind-brain alignment. During this period we work in thought to concretize the ideas and impressions received at the time of the full moon period and undertake the sometimes difficult process of translating them into practical plans that can be of service in the world. Lastly, I’ve found it useful to visualize the Path of Initiation in terms of overlapping stages rather than rigidly demarcated milestones. As in college studies, one may master advanced graduate courses on specific subjects of our interest while still completing our undergraduate degree.  At the “terminal” degree level (third initiation for some, higher initiations for others), it will all add up.

I. Math background [adapted from Wikipedia/calculus]

In mathematics, a function is a formal statement defining how the elements of one domain are mapped into another. For example, the expression f(x)=x+2 describes a function, f, that relates a number, x, with the results of an operation, x+2. Thus, an input of 3 is related to a value of 5, and can be expressed as f(3)=5.

The properties of functions may be further described with the tools of differential and integral calculus. The word “calculus” stems from the nascent development of mathematics: the early Greeks used pebbles arranged in patterns to learn arithmetic and geometry, and the Latin word for “pebble” is “calculus,” a counting unit.

Calculus is built on two major complementary ideas, differentiation and integration. Differential calculus “derives” the instantaneous rate of change of a mathematical function’s value with respect to changes in the input variable. Such “derivative” can be illustrated by the slope of a function’s graph. For instance, speed is the “instantaneous rate of change” of the “difference quotient” of distance over time.

Integral calculus, on the other hand, is an extension of the concept of a sum (Greek letter Sigma). The process of finding integrals is called integration and is used to find a measure of totality, such as an area. For instance, the area under a speed function curve represents the spatial distance traveled in a given time interval.

A Mathematical Approach to Spiritual Discernment

The scientific method is a recursive process of inductive and deductive reasoning whereby we observe, infer and make statistical comparisons in order to assess causation. In the inductive phase, structured observations lead to explanatory models of reality. In the deductive phase, these models are used to predict expected observations. Discrepancies between the expected and the actual observations are used to refine the explanatory model(s) leading to subsequent predictions and observations.

This scientific process of inquiry can also be described in terms of the spiritual disciplines of Observation, Recognition and Revelation. We train ourselves in the discipline of spiritual observation in order to recognize patterns of events in life. These creatively discovered or “discerned” patterns “reveal” causal or synchronistic relationships among events to be tested by future experimentation.

The fundamental context of any observation, as experienced by ordinary human consciousness, is dual. The very act of observing defines the basic duality of self (Observer) and the not-self (observed). Moreover, ordinary observations are always reducible to simple statements of empirical truth or falsity.

If we assume that Truth, Goodness and Beauty are absolute attributes of Reality, then a scientific observer is constantly faced with decisions to accept or reject the truth, goodness or beauty of inferences drawn on evidence produced by the act of observation. The four possible options may be portrayed thus:

If an observer always accepts true propositions [Te=0], we conclude that such observer has perfect sensitivity to ascertain the Truth. Likewise, if an observer always rejects false propositions [Fe=0], we conclude that such observer has perfect specificity to ascertain Falsity. An observer with both perfect sensitivity and perfect specificity has attained  perfect spiritual discernment: a very significant milestone in the evolution of human consciousness on Earth. It should be noted that such attainment would imply an unfathomable perfection to the ordinary rational mind, a division by zero. Spiritual disciplines define this stage as having attained true harmlessness: “perfect poise, a completed point of view and divine understanding.”

Short of this attainment, imperfect spiritual discernment may be mathematically defined as the ratio of two proportions: first, the proportion corresponding to correctly accepting true statements [Tc/(Tc+Te)]; and second, the proportion corresponding to incorrectly accepting false statements [Fe/(Fe+Fc]. This ratio may called the Discriminant Ratio (DR).

The greater the difference between Truth and Falsity in a given empirical proposition, the easier it would be to develop cognitive skills of adequate sensitivity and specificity to discern between them.

More commonly, however, in situations where the difference between Truth and Falsity is small, the observer needs to optimize the relationship between sensitivity and specificity in order to minimize errors of judgment.  Many spiritual disciplines encourage the practice of “evening reviews” in which the observer reviews the experience of the day. One practical aspect of this systematic exercise is to empirically ascertain the DR applicable in different situations. The end of cycles or projects may also afford unique opportunities to brood on these transcendental matters.

Short of the state of relative perfection, human consciousness relies on probability statements to quantify the uncertainty or doubt inherent in decisions made with imperfect empirical knowledge. Although gambling has been documented as early as in the Gambler’s Lament of the Rig-Veda, it was not until the late 17th and early 18th centuries that the mathematical theory of probability was first developed and established. To date, no consensus exists in regard to the subjective or objective nature of probability statements. However, for the purpose of this essay, probability will be defined in its subjective dimension as the degree of an observer’s belief in the truth or falsity of a given proposition.

The foremost exponent of the subjective approach to probability has been Thomas Bayes (1707-1761).  Spiritual discernment, as previously defined in terms of the DR, may be mathematically related to the observer’s beliefs by a derivation of Bayes’ Theorem of conditional probabilities:

(Precedent Belief) x (Discriminant Ratio) = Subsequent Belief

Belief is an attitude of mind in regard to explanatory models of reality. Beliefs also influence the way we structure consciousness to ascertain “facts.” Beliefs, in the Bayesian sense, are attitudes that can be evaluated in a continuous scale from zero (meaning impossible) to 1 (meaning certainty). Short of perfect convictions (i.e., beliefs with values of either 1 or 0), human consciousness relies on empirical evidence tested against models of reality to render judgments about events and their circumstances. This is the epistemological basis of the scientific method.

When it is “reasonable” to believe in a “probable” cause? Is credible, preponderant or “clear and convincing evidence” enough to ascertain truth, or should we believe something only when it is “beyond reasonable doubt”? These are instances in the field of law where these considerations are also relevant.

The scientific method is useless wherein certainty reigns. If a group of people is definitely convinced about the falsity of a proposition (precedent belief = 0), no empirical evidence or test whatsoever could possibly be produced to change their minds (subsequent belief = 0). This explains why ecclesiastical authorities would refuse to even look into Galileo’s telescope in the Middle Ages. History has proved them wrong but their action was consistent with Bayes Theorem. Likewise, there are people today who deny any truth in alternative healing, astrological influences or extrasensory perception. They may be right or wrong, but scientific evidence would prove them nothing because, in their minds, such events cannot possibly happen! Period.

The usefulness of the Bayes approach may also be illustrated by the analysis of the extreme attitudes of credulity and skepticism. The gullible attitude of mind leads to indiscriminate acceptance of both true and false propositions. The precedent belief is set high and the sensitivity far surpasses the specificity (rendering the DR close to 1). On the other hand, the skeptical attitude of mind leads to indiscriminate rejection both false and true propositions. The precedent belief is set low and the specificity far surpasses the sensitivity (rendering the DR close to 1). In both cases the individual lacks spiritual discernment (DR=1) and does not benefit much from empirical evidence  “Tested” beliefs would just mirror preconceived ones. Not much has been learned from the observation process.

The observer needs to constantly calibrate the DR or spiritual discernment according to the circumstances at hand. These circumstances include both the past experience of the observer and the context of the events. In some circumstances, an experienced observer may also rely more on precedent beliefs than on “partial” or “biased” empirical evidence. But there is a well-known danger in taking the position that “the empirical evidence is wrong and I am right.” The difference between a fanatic and an expert is, in a sense, very simple: both have the same attitude of mind, but one is supported by the Truth and the other is not. Many have lost their way by their inability to discern this subtle but most vital difference.

The greatest practical usefulness of the Bayesian approach and the conventional scientific method is reserved for agnostic observers. For an agnostic observer, the precedent belief in a proposition is defined by a 50:50 chance. According to the Bayes’ Theorem (2), if such an Observer is faced with scientific evidence that favors one of two choices by a 99:1 margin (DR=99), then the agnostic individual is entitled to believe in the proposition with a 99% chance of being correct ([1:1] x [99:1] = [99:1]). Further scientific evidence may always adjust, or even reverse, such decision though.

As we grow in the experience of Truth, Goodness and Beauty, we learn to scientifically and spiritually discern the better from the worse in events and circumstances. We grow in humility as each new “conviction” opens unplowed fields of uncertainty. We also learn that the better of today may be the worse of tomorrow. We may thus grow in tolerance and compassion towards those who hold today our beliefs of yesterday, as we also grow in recognition of those who know today what we may believe tomorrow. And so on, until we truly know.

Participatory Observation: the Discipline of Spiritual Freedom

Re-cognition of our spiritual essence may be the very original purpose of human existence. The seemingly perfect but flowerless bliss of pure Being is incomplete without the fruits of experience. The “descent” from pure subjectivity to objective manifestation provides the means to consummate unconscious bliss into recognizable, and thus necessarily conscious, experiences.

The “original sin” may well be represented by the “descent” from the blissful realm of Being to the painful realm of ex-peri-ence (i.e., beyond the peri-meter of pure essence). Somehow, we lost our “freedom of being” to become “enslaved” into the wheels of experience. But why does experience need to be painful and slavering?

We will attempt to demonstrate that the answer to this fundamental question of human existence is related to two key questions about cognition (i.e., epistemology): 1) how do we conceive the world? and, 2) what is the structure of thought through which we relate to the world?

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras (sutras = threads), “the earliest known systematic statement of the philosophical insights and practical psychology that define yoga,”(1) may shed some light as we attempt to answer these fundamental questions. By “yoga” we mean “a system that ‘yokes’ one’s consciousness to a spiritually liberating discipline.”(1)

Desire for conscious experience seems the logical initial point to understand the problem of human existence. Desire is a legitimate urge to seek objective manifestation, provided that we do not “forget” who we are and why are we here for. However, true recognition is actually impossible without first forgetting our true identity and purpose. Once we forget, we lose our spiritual point of reference and we are doomed to misconceive reality as it is misrepresented to us through our senses. Misconceptions give rise to mis-identifications, the most significant of which is the illusion of separateness. Mis-identifications will inevitably take us to that “valley of sorrows” that many call the human experience.

Thus, the answer to how do we conceive the world may be that, until we recognize who are we and our purpose in life, desire for experience confounds our judgment producing misconceptions. Misconceptions lead us to mis-identifications that enslave us in pain and isolation. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, “an economical set of mnemonic pronouncements”(1) on the discipline of spiritual freedom, not only offer this diagnosis of the problem, but also provide a thorough analysis of the “structure of thought” that perpetuates such painful state of affairs.

Let us visualize the number 8 as a two-wheel engine: a bottom wheel turning clockwise and engaged with a top wheel turning counter-clockwise. The bottom wheel is comprised of two halves: the lower one contains memories and the higher one contains mental impressions. Likewise, the top wheel is comprised of two halves: the lower one contains the mental representation of actions and the higher one the emerging actions themselves. Finally, the point of engagement or “yoke” between these two wheels is the process of thinking, or thought, in an endless cycle of reciprocal causation with memories and actions.

We may refer to this pictorial representation of the number “8,” so significant in the Hermetic literature (2³ = 8, Hermes Trismegistus) as the “THOTH engine.” It is suggested that this metaphorical engine is symbolic of the “structure of thought” presented in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras.

We are all familiar with the expression “I think, therefore I am.” We suggest that this proposition is of impossible verification except for those initiated in the Science of Raja Yoga. To the ordinary consciousness Descartes’s proposition actually becomes “I thought, therefore I was.”

To the ordinary consciousness, it is the memory or synthetic recollection of thoughts that validates the “I” identity. We may remember who we were an instant ago, but we do not really know who we are right now.

Ordinary self-awareness is a succession of memory frames (i.e., fragments of experience) presented so fast to our consciousness as to give us the illusion of a movie-like continuity. The ordinary mind uses the THOTH engine to generate the mental impressions and memories that will eventually emerge as actions in the objective world. The very “habit of thinking not only generates but preserves memories.”(1) As in movie frames, the faster we run the engine the better will be the illusion of continuity. Thirty frames per second is all it takes for movie frames to be perceived as continuous by the ordinary brain. We constantly reconstruct who we think we are.

But, what if we decide to slow down the THOTH engine until we cannot only recognize the memory frames for what they are, but can actually bring the THOTH engine to a standstill? What if we accomplish the “cessation of the turnings of thought?” This is precisely the “discipline of freedom” suggested by the Sutras. We may thus become true participant Observers, fully integrated into the matrix of Being substanding reality, but isolated from ephemeral manifestations that enslave us. Patanjali refers to this hyper-conscious state of pure contemplation as “isolated unity.”(2)

We arrive at this isolated unity by reversing the mis-identification process initiated by desire. Patanjali proposes that a way to break the painful hold of desire is to use thought to experience and overcome the limitation of thought itself. We begin to accomplish this by the practice of discernment.

Discernment may be defined as the ability to correctly choose (i.e., inter-elect) among possible alternatives of action. The practice of the modern scientific method provides ample opportunity to engage in that prolonged mental concentration (i.e., meditation with seed) necessary to develop the discerning habit. And one of the major scientific breakthroughs coming from the field of quantum physics is the apparent effect of the (participant) observer in the process of observation itself (Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle).

Initially we practice self-defensive discernment as the immune system does: by discriminating between the self and the not-self, and keeping that information as cellular memory, called immunity, to be triggered by future events. Then, after much pain, we learn to discern between good and evil intentions behind all actions. But eventually we practice the supreme discernment: that between the Observer and the observed in the process of cognition itself. Thus is the ultimate re-cognition attained.

The practice of discernment is enhanced by becoming proficient in the complementary spiritual practices of dispassion and detachment. The three D’s which initiate us into the eight-fold discipline of spiritual freedom are: discernment (intellectual), dispassion (emotional) and detachment (physical). These three are the reverse images of the “passionate attachments” that ignorance (i.e., “forgetting” who we really are) begets.

Passionate attachments to seed-bearing memories drive our thoughts and actions. This is a crucial realization for us to understand our plight, and to appreciate our need for a spiritually liberating discipline. This eight-fold discipline of spiritual freedom is comprised of:

1. Five Commandments (harmlessness, truthfulness, humility, continence and poverty).
2. Five Rules (purification, serenity, fiery aspiration, spiritual understanding and consecrated devotion to the Soul).
3. Right Posture.
4. Right Rhythmic Breathing.
5. Abstraction, or the withdrawal and subjugation of the senses.
6. Concentration, fixing the mind upon a particular object.
7. Meditation, or prolonged concentration.
8. Contemplation (with or without seed), the capstone of the pyramidal discipline of spiritual freedom.

The liberated Prodigal Son, enriched by the Mother of experience, returns to the Father and says, “It is finished,” because the purpose of experience has been consummated.

Then, and only then, may the Observer assert the fact: I contemplate (past, present and future), therefore I AM! The Prodigal Son has thus given up all attachments. He has truly “for-given” because He was able to recognize His essential divinity in all. He has for-given the experience of pain, and transmuted it into conscious bliss, in obtaining His freedom.

Therefore, human life experienced in ignorance is necessarily painful and a true “valley of sorrows.” However, there is a way to discerningly garner the fruits of experience with dispassion and detachment. This is the Way of the Omniscient Observer Who, as an all-seeing eye, in “isolated unity,” recognizes His true Identity and makes it to the mountaintop of human attainment.

In the teaching of the Buddha, with its emphasis on the three D’s of the Way of Release, we have the preparatory method for the three I’s that the Way of the Christ reveals: individualism, initiation and identification.

“That great Individuality, the Christ, through the process of the five great Initiations, gave to us a picture of the stages and methods whereby identification with God can be brought about.” (From Bethlehem to Calvary [FBC], p.17)

The Way of the Christ is well represented by His own life story: 1) birth, 2) baptism, 3) transfiguration, 4) crucifixion and 5) resurrection/ascension. The Way of Release prepare us for these death-conquering events in our own life. Christ assured us that this is an attainable goal for us because “he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do.” (St. John, XIV, 12)

Such dramatic representation of spiritual recognitions was Christ’s task 2,000 years ago. The Christianity that we have come to know during this past “Age of the Fishes,” with the call for us to become “fishers of men,” is, however, a bridging religion. “Christianity is the religion of that transitional period which links the era of self-conscious individualistic existence to a future group-conscious unified world.” (FBC, p.18). Thus will (individual) Freedom in (group) Service be realized.

The future is now, and to resume His task in the “Age of the Water Carrier,” the Christ –the Lord Maitreya–  will reappear, overshadowed by His Brother –the Lord Buddha. “Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in.” (St. Luke XXII, 10) Let us thus meet in the joy of Service!
